CIRCLE 2019 Participants: Meet Alina Gorlova - “Between Two Wars”

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

Q: Please introduce yourself and your project briefly .

A: My name is Alina Gorlova, I’m a film director from Ukraine. My project, with working title Between Two Wars, tells a story of one big Kurdish family from Syria, spread by the world because of war, shown through the perspective of its young son. Living in Ukraine, Iraq and Germany, they try to find their place and save the contact between each other, fighting this huge black and white war machine in each own way.

Q: What was the biggest challenge in making this film?

A: The biggest challenge is to build my narration in the film. It’s not linear story and it was hard to edit it. And I had to find enough brave to use symbols and metaphors to drive my story forward.

Q: Can you compare your experience at CIRCLE with other similar platforms that you have been part of?

The most unique feature about CIRCLE is its intimate atmosphere where you could share your fears and doubts. I think it’s worth to be expanded.

Q: What were the most important benefits from being part of CIRCLE project?

A: Support of my author view.

Q: What advice do you have for other (female) directors?

A: Not to be afraid and film what you want. Watch more movies and find yourself, using different arts.

Q: Name your favorite woman-directed film and why.

A: The 3 Rooms of Melancholia by Pirjo Honkasalo, because of metaphorical flow in the film.
